Self-Guided Interpretive Tours

Trail maps and interpretive guides are available through the Campus Natural Reseve office. Guides contain information about the 12 stops on the Seep Zone Interpretive Trail. The Seep Zone Interpretive Trail, an approximately 1.5 mile trail, begins near the Baskin Engineering and Communications buildings. This trail winds through a variety of plant communities on its way to the Crown Meadow. You will see:

  • Natural seeps and springs and their unique assemblages of plants
  • An old logging road used around the turn of the century.
  • The results of competition between trees for space and light.
  • Ecological succession in action.
  • The results of dependence of the Chaparral community on fire.
  • Secondary redwood growth
  • The old Douglas Fir with a special name

Spring Road begins between Baskin Engineering and Communications. Fuel Break Road begins above the campus Fire Station.

Children on tour holding hands around a tree named "Lucky"

These children on a tour discover the size and age of this special Douglas fir. This tree is indeed old to be alive in this formerly logged forest--thus it has earned the name "Lucky" and is a special feature of the Seep Zone trail.
